Joan Yusui Suzuki, Riji, Sogetsu School Joan Yusui Suzuki’s life has centered on ikebana since her childhood. Joan was born in San Francisco but spent her early years in Japan. As a teenager she began studies of Sogetsu ikebana and received her first teaching certificate at the age of 16. After returning to the San Francisco Bay Area in 1953, she began teaching ikebana and also assisted her mother, Shunei Uchida, who first introduced Sogetsu to the San Francisco Bay Area. Joan recently retired from a long career in administration with Japan Air Lines and is now Director of the Sogetsu San Francisco Bay Area Branch.

In 1973 Joan received Sogetsu’s highest teaching rank of Riji from Headmaster Sofu Teshigahara. Since that time, many awards and honors have followed: Mohan-Sho (Model Teachers Award) in 1968; Sofu-Sho (Sofu Award) in 1978; Sogetsu Eiyo Sho in 1997 from the late Headmaster Hiroshi Teshigahara; and in 2007 the Sogetsu Honor Award from Headmaster Ms. Akane Teshigahara at the Sogetsu 80th Anniversary Commemorative Ceremony.

Joan has organized many cultural tours to Japan for Sogetsu members and their friends. She attends summer seminars and other classes at Sogetsu Tokyo headquarters. She regularly teaches ikebana classes, gives demonstrations and workshops, and exhibits locally and in other states.

She is a charter member of the San Francisco Bay Area Chapter of Ikebana International and the Ikebana Teachers Federation of Northern California.
