Sogetsu artists Marguerite
Kikuho Carmine (left) and Ruth Ruho Sootaru (right) demonstrated
the imaginative use of December's seasonal Ikebana materials in their joint
program. Each artist presented a distinctive interpretation of Sogetsu styles
and each created several arrangements before combining talents to present one
very large work to conclude their program.
A Bay Area native, Marguerite Carmine has studied various arts including painting, sculpture, basketry, and installation art. She has studied Sogetsu Ikebana for more then 20 years and draws upon her skill in various arts for her Ikebana.
After a tumultuous youth fleeing wartime Europe, Ruth Sootaru discovered Ikebana through her love of the outdoors, the arts, nature and gardening. Her work is known for elegance of style and reflections of her European heritage. She has studied Sogetsu Ikebana for nearly two decades.
Both Ms. Carmine and Sootaru are students of Soho Sakai, an eminent Bay Area Ikebana teacher.
